Hard Gear Skiving of Internal Gears

Although skiving was invented over 100 years ago, it is still considered a relatively new process. The reasons why this high-performance process has only slowly found its way into production are technical in nature: as a continuous machining process with a geometrically defined cutting edge, the rapidly alternating forces on the skiving tool present particular challenges. Therefore, the development of high-performance cutting materials, machines, workholding devices, and process simulations requires a high level of technical expertise covering all individual areas.

Highly Productive Continuous Machining Process

Hard skiving is a highly productive continuous machining process in which the tool axis is inclined relative to the workpiece axis. The workpiece and the tool are in mesh and rotate continuously and synchronously according to the kinematics of a helical gear pair. This process is particularly suitable for the machining of internal ring gears (annulus gears) or collision-critical external gears, offering the highest precision with low tooth flank surface roughness.

Technically Demanding Implementation

In hard finishing, the Reishauer skiving represents an alternative to honing or profile grinding and is clearly superior to these processes in terms of achievable gear quality and productivity.

However, hard skiving is technically very demanding due to the close interactions between the process, machine, skiving tool, and workholding device, and requires deep, holistic coordination. Reishauer’s decades of experience in machine and tool manufacturing, as well as in technology, are therefore the essential foundation for the economic and successful use of skiving for the hard finishing of internal gears.

Precise, Process-Reliable, Cost-Efficient

With the introduction of the RS 300 hard-skiving machine, Reishauer establishes itself with a highly specialized, in-house developed, and perfectly coordinated solution for the highly productive hard finishing of gears for future transmission designs.

The cutting tool plays a decisive role. Its PCBN high-performance cutting material enables long tool life while maintaining maximum workpiece quality. Combined with the high dynamic stiffness and drive dynamics, the Reishauer hard skiving process reliably equalizes even large hardening distortions.
